Cal Poly Pomona 3, Coyotes 2 (box score)
POMONA -- Chris Miller's single to left in the 10th inning scored the winning run as the Coyotes were defeated 3-2 by Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA baseball Thursday afternoon at Scolinos Field.
The Coyotes (12-10 overall, 9-8 CCAA) and Broncos (18-10, 11-10) resume their series with a single game Friday at Pomona. First pitch is 3 p.m.
CSUSB gave starting pitcher
Casey McCarthy a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Matt Winn's two-out single to short brought in
Curtis Cassise, who led off with a walk.
The Broncos tied the game with a run in the fifth and went ahead in the seventh on Mike Santora's RBI-double.
The Coyotes came back in the ninth to the tie the game at 2-2. Pinch hitter
Matt Haney singled to center and Winn followed with a single and the Coyotes had two men on with one out.
After
Josh Herrera flew out to center, senior
Paul Eshleman singled down the left-field line to score Haney.
The Broncos had a chance for the win in the ninth with two men on and just one out. But Jordan Whitman was thrown out at third on an attempted stolen base by Eshleman and Chris Curtis flew out to end the threat.
The Coyotes were retired in order in the 10th. Senior
Brandon Day singled with two outs, but was called out when he attempted to reach second on the play.
McCarthy threw eight innings and gave up seven hits and two runs -- both earned. He had two walks and did not have a strikeout.
Broncos starter Erick Ruvalcaba was equally stingy. He gave up five hits in eight innings.
