Box Score: Cal State Stanislaus 2, Coyotes 1
TURLOCK -- Junior
Ethan Chapman went 3-for-4 with a double and
Curtis Cassise added a double, but the visiting Coyotes were frustrated in a 2-1 loss to Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA baseball series opener Friday.
The Coyotes, now 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA, look to straighten themselves in Saturday's doubleheader against the host Warriors (5-6, 2-3).
CSUSB scored its only run of the game in the second. With two out,
Mike Newell laced a single to right center that scored
Matt Winn, who led off the inning with a hit by pitch.
But that would be CSUSB's only score as it stranded five men in scoring position.
The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in the third, then earned the go-ahead tally in the eighth.
Senior LHP
Cory Caruso earned the opening game start and gave the Coyotes every opportunity for the win. He pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits, two runs -- one earned. He struck out two and walked one batter. Sophomore LHP reliever
Kerry Kelley threw one inning and had one strikeout and two walks.
Seniors
Brandon Day and
Edwin Mendoza each had a single as the Coyotes had seven hits, and stranded seven runners on base.
