Otters 7, Coyotes 6 16 innings (Box Score)
SEASIDE -- The Coyotes and Cal State Monterey Bay played 16 innings in 4 hours and 30 minutes Sunday and a fielder's choice RBI was the deciding factor in a 7-6 CSUSB loss in CCAA baseball.
The Coyotes lost three of four games and dropped to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA. They will remain on the road this upcoming week with a series that begins Friday at Cal State Stanislaus.
The Coyotes led 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, but the Otters tied the game at 4-4 on a one-out double given up by senior All-American Josh Pond.
The game remained tied 4-4 until CSUSB scored twice in the 15th. Ethan Chapman led off with a single and Curtis Cassise drove him in with a double. Edwin Mendoza followed with a single that scored Cassise and the Coyotes led 6-4.
But the Otters came right back with two of their own in the 15th.
Coyotes' pitcher combined to strikeout 16 Otters with starter Mike Mudron owning four. Bryant Hollingsworth relieved Mudron in the sixth and struck out two.
Sophomore LHP Kerry Kelley continued to pitch well as he relieved Pond in the ninth and induced a double play to finish the ninth. He threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out six, walked two and did not allow a hit.
Senior Eric Dow was 3-for-6 and Brandon Day had two hits for the Coyotes.
