Coyotes softball swept at Cal State Monterey Bay

CSUSB returns home Friday against defending NCAA champ UC San Diego

Junior Patty Masner had a two-run double for the Coyotes in the opener.
SEASIDE -- The Coyotes were turned back both times in Saturday's softball doubleheader against Cal State Monterey, losing 10-7 in the opener and 11-1 in five innings in the second.

CSUSB, now 7-10 overall, 3-5 CCAA, have lost four consecutive and look to snap the losing streak next week at home against defending NCAA champion UC San Diego.

Game 1: Otters 10, Coyotes 7 (Box Score)
The Coyotes and Otters were tied 4-4 entering the bottom of the fifth when CSUMB struck with six runs and held off the Coyotes for the win.

Felicia Cervantes put the Coyotes on the scoreboard in the first on a sacrifice bunt that scored Alex Mitchell, who led off the game with a single up the middle.

After the Otters featured a four-run, four-hit third inning, CSUSB came back with a three-run, four-hit fifth.

Patty Masner connected on a two-run double down the left-field line for the Coyotes' only extra-base hit of the game. Jame Leffingwell earlier scored Mitchell on a single through the left side.

CSUMB took command with its six-run, five-hit fifth.

Monica Ferguson had the only RBI for the Coyotes in the seventh, when they scored three runs on three hits. Ferguson pinch-hit for Jamie Nakagawa, and lifted a single to left that scored Leffingwell, who singled.

Senior RHP Courtney Wilhelms (3-5) was the loser. She threw three innings and gave up four runs -- all earned.

Game 2: Otters 11, Coyotes 1 (5 innings) (Box score)
The Coyotes mustered just two hits and scored an unearned run in the first.

The Otters earned the sweep with a five-run fourth after leading 6-1.

Freshmen Charlotte Galzote and Victoria Lievanos accounted for CSUSB's two hits -- both singles.

Carly Land (3-5) took the loss. She threw 2 1/3 innings and gave up six runs -- three earned -- and allowed six runs.
