Darren Dworak had two extra-base hits including a home run, but the Coyotes were stopped 5-3 by Cal State Monterey Bay in the teams' opening game of their CCAA baseball series Friday.
The Coyotes' record is now 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA, while CSUMB is 10-5, 3-2.
The Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dworak hit a two-out double to left center that scored
Curtis Cassise, who reached base on a hit by pitch.
CSUMB answered with three runs in the third off Coyotes' RHP
Casey McCarthy. Dworak narrowed the gap in the sixth inning with a solo shot to right center.
CSUMB pushed its lead to 4-2 in the sixth before the Coyotes got within a run in the seventh. Senior
Edwin Mendoza ripped a one-out home run down the left-field line to cut the Otters' lead to 4-3.
The Otters pushed a run across in the seventh for the final tally.
Brandon Day was the only other Coyote to earn an extra-base hit. He doubled in the eighth inning.
McCarthy took the loss. He threw 6 2/3 innings and struck out six with two walks. He allowed five runs -- two earned -- and gave up nine hits.
