Coyotes sweep past Gators

Leffingwell's walk-off HR leads to doubleheader sweep

Jamie Leffingwell earned her 100th career hit and ripped a 2-run, walk-off home run to lead CSUSB to an 8-7 win over SFSU.
SAN BERNARDINO -- Junior Jamie Leffingwell laced a one-out, two-run walk-off home run to lift the Coyotes past visiting San Francisco State 8-7 and secured the sweep in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball Saturday.

The Coyotes took the series, 3 games to 1, as they improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. The Gators dropped to 4-9, 2-6.

CSUSB is at Cal State Monterey Bay next weekend.

CSUSB found itself trailing 7-6 when the Gators' Jenna Wermes hit a two-run single in the 7th.

But the Coyotes would not be denied. After Courtney Wilhelms flew out to lead-off the 7th, senior Felicia Cervantes singled to right. Patty Masner came in to pinch-run and that set-up Leffingwell's heroics. She drove a Becky Nakano offering deep over the left-field wall and the Coyotes emptied the bench in rejoice.

Leffingwell was the only Coyote to have more than one RBI, but the Coyotes dominated with 16 hits. Cervantes was 4-for-4 with a double and Alyssa Flores also added a home run -- her second in the series.

Mitchell, Britney Butler, Flores and freshman Charlotte Galzote all had two hits.

RHP Carly Land earned the win in relief of Courtney Wilhelms. Land threw two innings, gave up three hits, two runs -- both earned -- and walked one batter. Wilhelms struck out two, walked three and scattered seven hits.

Land improved to 3-3 on the season by picking up the win in the opener.

The Coyotes sent 12 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on five hits in the fourth to go ahead 11-1.

Mitchell set the tone right away with a lead-off home run in the first.

Leading 2-1 entering the fourth, Butler cappe the inning with a three-run homer to left.

Mitchell and Butler each had three RBI, while Mitchell, Brittney Ybarra, Felicia Cervantes and Galzote all had two hits.

Land earned the win. She gave up five hits, one earned run and struck out two.
