HAYWARD -- The Coyotes nearly overcame a 21-point deficit in their 58-52 loss to host Cal State East Bay in CCAA women's basketball Friday night.
CSUSB, now 8-15 overall and 7-12 in the CCAA, will look to earn a split on the weekend Saturday night at Cal State Monterey Bay. CSUEB improved to 11-14, 8-11 and gained one game ahead of the Coyotes with three games remaining in the regular season.
The Coyotes trailed throughout the game and trailed 27-6 with 4:37 remaining in the first half. Coyotes leading scorer
Angela Streets was held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes as CSUSB shot just 19.4 percent from the floor on 6-of-31 shooting.
Down 49-38 with 4:02 remaining, the Coyotes got back into the game on a 14-5 run over the next three-plus minutes. Junior
Kristen Huffman scored six of her team-high 12 points and got her team to within a possession of the lead when her layup cut CSUEB's lead at 54-52 with 17 seconds left.
The Pioneers' Micah Walker hit a pair of free throws on their next possession with 14 seconds left to pull her team ahead by four. Streets' 3-pointer was off wtih three seconds to go.
