SAN BERNARDINO --
Edwin Mendoza hit a two-run homer and later added a run-scoring single -- all in the ninth inning -- but it wasn't enough as visiting Sonoma State earned an 11-8 victory in the series opener Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes, now 3-3 and 0-1 in the CCAA, will meet the Seawolves (3-4, 1-0) in a doubleheader Saturday that begins at 11 a.m.

Sonoma State led 11-1 through nine with four runs in the fifth and three runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to hold what seemed to be an insurmountable lead. But CSUSB came back with a seven-run ninth and sent 12 men to the plate to close the gap.
Devon Zenn had two home runs and finished the day 5-for-5 with six RBI and Thomas Lee earned the win for SSU (2-0), throwing seven innings and giving up three hits with seven strikeouts.
Senior
Darren Dworak had a solo home run in the eighth inning for the Coyotes and
Matt Winn added to the ninth-inning rally with a three-run homer.
Mendoza was 2-for-5 with three RBI and
Brandon Day was the only other Coyote with a multi-hit day with a double and a single.
Senior RHP
Casey McCarthy took the loss for the Coyotes. He threw seven innings, gave up 1 hits, five runs (all earned) and struck out nine with two walks.
