Coyotes softball splits Saturday play

CSUSB holds on in 4-3 win over MSU-Billings, loses 12-4 in 6 to Cal Baptist

Alex Mitchell had a five-hit day as the Coyotes split their games Saturday.
LAS VEGAS -- Alyssa Flores connected on a solo home run,and Alex Mitchell and Brittney Ybarra each had two hits as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Montana State-Billings 4-3 in Saturday's play at the Desert Stinger Classic, hosted by MSU-Billings.

Down 1-0 entering the second inning, Flores led off with a solo homer and Mitchell added a run-scoring single that put CSUSB up 2-1.

The Coyotes added two runs in the third. Victoria Lievanos' double to left center scored Ybarra, who led off with a single. Lievanos then scored on an error from the center fielder, after Jamie Leffingwell singled up the middle.

The Yellowjackets cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth, but Carly Land came on in relief of Courtney Wilhelms and threw three innings of two-hit shutout ball.

Earlier, the Coyotes were handled by Cal Baptist 12-4 in a game that ended in the sixth.

The Coyotes led 3-0 after the first inning and led 3-2 through five. But the Lancers struck with 10 runs in the sixth to win going away.

Mitchell was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Felecia Cervantes had an RBI. Leffingwell had two hits.

The Coyotes conclude the tourney with Sunday's game against Dixie State. The teams split their Thursday doubleheader played in St. George, Utah.
