Coyotes win two in first-day play in Las Vegas

CSUSB defeats Western Washington, Western Oregon, improves to 3-3 overall

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Junior Alyssa Flores provided all sorts of power at the plate with two home runs and four RBI and teammate Britney Butler added a two-run shot as the Coyotes defeated Western Washington 7-3 at the Desert Stinger Tournament.

The Coyotes earned their second win of the day with a 4-2 win over Western Oregon.

CSUSB, now 3-3 overall, takes on Cal Baptist and Montana State-Billings on Saturday and faces Dixie State on Sunday.

The Coyotes dominated their game against the Vikings as they scored two runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third for the win.

Butler gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead when she went deep to left center and scored Jamie Leffingwell, who hit a one-out singles.

Flores then led off the second with a shot to left. Four batters later, senior Alex Mitchell grounded out to second to score Victoria Lievanos, who singled.

In the third, Flores came through again. After Butler reached on an intentional walk, Courtney Wilhelms got on base after striking out. One batter later, Flores homered to center and CSUSB led 7-0.

Abreanna Landeros earned the win. She threw four innings, struck out three, walked one and allowed four hits, two runs -- both earned.

A three-run fifth inning capped by Mitchell's two-run home run helped the Coyotes to a sweep in opening-day play.

Butler gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first with a home run to center.

Tied at 1-1 through four, the Coyotes sent nine to the plate and scored three runs on four hits. Brittney Ybarra and Carmen Galzote each had singles to begin the inning. Ybarra later scored on a throwing error adn that brought up Mitchell, who ripped a shot to center for a two-run homer.

Galzote was 3-for-3 and Butler and senior Felicia Cervantes each had two hits.

Senior RHP Courtney Wilhelms earned the complete-game win. She gave up four runs, struck out three and walked two.
