SAN BERNARDINO -- A 15-day break from the court did not stop the Coyotes from earning their best victory of the season.
Freshman
Alexcia Mack scored a team-high 19 points to lead three players in double figures as CSUSB broke away from UC San Diego and earned a 66-62 win before a crowd of 101 at Coussoulis Arena in CCAA women's play Sunday afternoon.
The victory was CSUSB's first home victory over UCSD in eight seasons.
The Coyotes returned to the .500 level at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA heading into Tuesday afternoon's nonconference game against Hope International. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. at Ontario's Citizens Business Bank Arena.
The game factored upon the Coyotes ability to hit shots in the final 15 minutes of play as down the stretch, they hit 12 of their last 18 shots from the floor.
CSUSB missed its first nine shots of the second half and that allowed the Tritons and in particular, Erin Dautremont, to catch fire. Dautremont scored UCSD's first 10 points of the second half and gave her team its largest lead of the game, 39-34 with 14:17 remaining.
CSUSB fought back as the game was tied twice in the next five minutes until Dautremont gave UCSD its final lead of the game, 53-52 with 6:06 left.
Junior
Nicole Chapple responded with consecutive layups and two free throws from Mack put CSUSB up five, 58-53 at the 4:24 mark.
After a 3-pointer from UCSD's Daisy Feder, Chapple again scored on a layup and Mack hit her third 3-pointer of the game and CSUSB had its largest lead of the game -- 63-56 with 3:14 left.
The Tritons cut the lead to three twice, but senior
Qorreah Joice iced the game with a free throw with seven seconds left.
Mack was 7-of-14 from the floor, while Chapple finished with a season-best 12 points. Senior
Jaslyn Cosey had 11 points off the bench for the Coyotes.
In the opening half, CSUSB had no answer for Feder, who had 21 in the opening 20 minutes. She finished with a game-high 28.
Dautremont had all of her 16 points in the second half.
