Coyotes fall just short against Cal State L.A.

– Junior Trinidee Trice paced the Coyotes with a game-high 26 points, but visiting Cal State L.A. came back with an impressive second half as the Golden Eagles earned  an 87-82 victory before a Coussoulis Arena crowd of 370 on Saturday night.

The Coyotes, now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, are off for two weeks and return to CCAA play Dec. 16 against UC San Diego at Coussoulis.

CSUSB played superb offense in the first half as it fired 63.6 percent from the field (21 for 33) and led 44-37 at the break with Trice scoring 13.

Senior Kristen Huffman put the Coyotes up 59-52 with a 3-pointer with 12:46 remaining in the game. But CSULA stopped the Coyotes over the next three minutes with a 10-0 run, capped by Lacey Gibbons' three with 9:49 left.

The game was tied three times, before Kaija Powell gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good on a jumper that put CSULA ahead 68-66 with 7:09 left.

Trice finished 11 of 18 from the floor and was the only Coyote to attempt a free throw, going 3-for-3. Huffman followed with 15, and junior Tayllor Gipson added 14. Senior Jaslyn Cosey also reached double figures with 12.

The Coyotes finished the night hitting 54.5 percent (36 for 66).

Tessondra Williams led CSULA (5-1, 2-1) with 24 points. The Golden Eagles, who hit 62.5 percent in the second half, also held the advantage in free throws – 15 to 3.
