Coyotes open season with 66-46 win over La Sierra

Joice scores game-high 11 points in opening 20 minutes

-- Coach Kevin Becker received scoring efforts from nine players as the Coyotes opened the 2012-13 women's basketball season with a 66-46 win over La Sierra in nonconference play Monday night at Coussoulis Arena.

Senior Qorreah Joice led the Coyotes in scoring with a game-high 11 points -- all in the first half -- as CSUSB led from beginning to end and maintained a double-digit lead for the final 30 minutes of play.

Tayllor Gipson and Kristen Huffman each had nine points as the Coyotes fired 45.2 percent from the floor (28-62). Alexcia Mack had eight points, while sophomore Briana Baker dealt six assists -- all in the first half -- and had a game-high three steals. She also contributed five points.

CSUSB got going in the first half after La Sierra pulled within a point at 7-6 on a 3-pointer from Natalia Hawthorne with 16:40 remaining in the half.

The Coyotes responded with a 23-5 run over the next 6-plus minutes and led 30-11 on a 3-pointer from Jenna Klein with 8:20 left.

The Golden Eagles never got closer than 10 points in the second half.

Joice led the Coyotes in rebounds with five.

Hawthorne had 10 points for La Sierra.

The Coyotes next play Friday at the UC San Diego Tritons Tournament. They will face Tampa at 5 p.m.
