Box Score: Coyotes 2, Sonoma State 1
ROHNERT PARK -- The Coyotes had every right to celebrate like never before as the horn sounded for the final time Sunday afternoon.
For the first in school history, first-year coach Lance Thompson and his Coyotes earned a victory over the Seawolves with their 2-1 decision. The teams had met on the field 18 previous times, resulting in 16 defeats and two ties for the Coyotes.
But this day belonged to the Coyotes (4-1-6 overall, 4-1-4 CCAA), who gave their coach a game to remember in his first meeting against SSU as the Coyotes' head coach.
Junior
Demetri Burgos scored a goal for the first time since the season opener when he fired a shot on a cross from freshman
Corey Christ at the 18-minute mark. Ten minutes, the team's leading scorer, freshman
Ricardo Velasco, drew a penalty kick and succeeded and CSUSB was well on its way to a historic result.
Velasco's goal was his fourth in 2012.
SSU (5-4-2, 4-3-2) cut the deficit to one on a PK in the 61st minute, but senior All-American GK
Tanner Olinger and his teammates allowed just two SOG for the game.
The teams scrapped with 48 total fouls and CSUSB shut down F Taylor Varnadore, one of the top offensive threats in the CCAA, who had just one shot on the afternoon.
CSUSB returns to the pitch Friday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Carson.
