Box Score: Coyotes 1, CSULA 1
LOS ANGELES -- Freshman
Leo Mendoza blasted a shot from up close in the second half and that allowed the Coyotes and Cal State L.A. to tie 1-1 Sunday afternoon in CCAA men's soccer at Jesse Owens Stadium.
The day was a historic one for the Coyotes (4-2-7 overall, 4-2-5 CCAA), who tied the NCAA Division II record for most ties in a season. They now share the record with Seattle Pacific, which earned seven in its 7-6-7 season in 2007.
The Golden Eagles (9-3-2, 8-2-2) grabbed the lead in the 9th minute of play on Luis Trujillo's first goal of the season. It came from Erik Vargas and Trujillo controlled the ball in the box and got it past Coyotes' GK
Tanner Olinger.
The teams play the next 52 minutes without a goal until Mendoza came through in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal that sailed through the lower left corner.
CSULA out-shot the Coyotes 23-9, but had just three shots on goal as did the Coyotes. The Golden Eagles totaled nine shots in the two overtime sessions, but not one of them was a SOG.
Mendoza had two SOG and freshman
Ricardo Velasco had the other for the Coyotes, who now prepare for Friday's home contest against Chico State.
The NCAA record is the second that the Coyotes have earned this season. Four of their seven ties have been scorless, sharing the record with Rockhurst (2009) and Chico State (2004).
