SAN BERNARDINO
-- Freshmen Briana Baker and Shayna Stuart each scored season-highs and teammate Kristin Huffman also scored a season-high with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the host Coyotes fought hard against No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay, losing 63-54 before a crowd of 178 at Coussoulis Arena.

The Coyotes (4-9 overall and 3-6 CCAA) look to shrug off a tough loss as they take on Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.

Coach Kevin Becker needed those quality efforts from his freshmen and Huffman as the Coyotes' top two scorers -- Angela Streets and Eliza Dy -- struggled with their field goal shooting throughout against the Otters (11-1, 8-0). The duo entered play hitting 50 percent of the team's field goals this season, but against CSUMB, combined to hit just one of 21 from the field.

Dy had four points, hitting 1 of 17 from the floor, and Streets was 0 of 4 before fouling out.

Baker tied her season-best effort with 11 points and Stuart had 10.

Down 31-22 at halftime, CSUSB cut the lead to two twice. The first on Huffman's three-point play that put the Coyotes to within a basket at 37-35 with 12:09 left.

After Stefanie Corgel's 3-pointer, Street hit a free throw and Stuart followed with a jumper and the Coyotes were within a possession of the lead at 40-38 CSUMB with 10:30 left.

But two free throws and a jumper from Shonetta Crain-Williams gave the Otters a six-point cushion with 9:10 left and the Coyotes could not get any closer than four down the stretch.

Baker was 5 of 13 from the field and Stuart was 4 of 5. Huffman's double-double was her third of the season and her second straight.

Brittani Jefferson led the Otters with 18 points. The victory was CSUMB's fifth straight against the Coyotes, dating back to the 2009-10 season.
