SAN BERNARDINO -- The 2011 Coyote baseball season came to an end on Senior Day as CSUSB lost both games of a doubleheader in tough fashion, losing the opener 3-2 and the nightcap 7-6 to No. 7 UC San Diego at Fiscalini Field.

CSUSB finished the season 23-23 overall and 20-18 in the CCAA, while UCSD captured the regular-season title and moves on to next week's CCAA Tournament in Stockton as the top seed. The Tritons are 38-12 and 29-11.

Matt Winn gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a towering, tape-measure shot over the left-field wall.

The Coyotes held on to the lead through five innings, before UCSD struck with Kyle Saul's two-run shot in the left-center gap in the sixth.

In the eighth, CSUSB's David Silvas led off with a double right and moved over to third on Chris LeFay's ground out to short. That brought up Brandon Day, who laced a single to right to score Silvas and tie the game at 2-2.

But the Tritons got the go-ahead run in the ninth off Coyotes' closer Josh Pond. Pinch-hitter Nick Hom doubled to right center that fell between center fielder Ethan Chapman and right fielder Silvas. That scored Aaron Bauman, who hit a two-out, double to right.

Coyotes starter Lucas Sanford kept the Coyotes in the game with a standout start. He threw seven innings, gave up seven hits, two runs -- both earned -- and struck out five with two walks.

Silvas had two of the Coyotes' six hits.

In a game that had CCAA Tournament implications, the Coyotes needed a win to guarantee themselves a trip to Stockton as Cal Poly Pomona was swept in its doubleheader at Cal State L.A. on Saturday.

The game was tied at 1-1 through three innings before the Tritons struck with a four-run, fourth inning and led 5-1.

The Coyotes would not be deterred as they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits in the fourth and led 6-5.

Day singled to lead off the inning and Chris LeFay grounded out. That brought up Matt Winn, who walked. Tony York came on in relief of Jeff Rauh for UCSD and Darren Dworak greeted the reliever with an RBI-single.

Bryce Holland followed with a run-scoring single and Mike Newell followed with an RBI-fielder's choice and CSUSB trailed 5-4.

Ethan Chapman tied the game with an RBI-single that scored Holland. Erik Ornelas completed the scoring with a single up the middle that scored Newell.

In the sixth, UCSD tied the game at 6-6 on Danny Susdorf's single to right that scored Matt Hubbard, who led off with a single.

The game was tied at 6-6 entering the top of the seventh when the play of the game took place. Benton led off with a double and UCSD's Nick Liske came on to pinch run. After Grant Bauer sacrified Liske to third, the Coyotes turned to closer Josh Pond to stave off the threat.

With an 0-1 count to Hubbard, Pond was called for a balk from the home plate umpire and the go-ahead score came in and UCSD led 7-6.

The Coyotes got out of the inning down 7-6. David Silvas led off with a single to right and moved to second on Day's sacrifice bunt. But with one out and a runner on second, the Coyotes' Eric Dow grounded out and Matt Winn fouled out to the catcher to end the game and the season.

Holland, Chapman and Day each had two hits on the game.

The day completed the Coyote careers of eight seniors -- Erik Ornelas, Virgil Chavira, LeFay, Ryan Hulbert, Holland, Trevor Longfellow, Lucas Sanford and Carlos Nakamura
