SAN FRANCISCO – The Coyotes earned a split Saturday in their doubleheader against San Francisco State, losing the first game 3-1 and bouncing back in the second with a 3-0 victory in CCAA softball.
CSUSB (28-17 overall, 15-13 CCAA) returns to Coyote Field on Friday when it plays host to Cal State East Bay. The Gators are now 15-26, 8-20.
Game 1: SFSU 3, Coyotes 1
The Coyotes trailed 3-0 through six and mustered a run in the seventh in the opener.
Jamie Leffingwell doubled to left center and
Courtney Wilhelms scored, after leading off the inning with a single.
The Coyotes had runners at second and third with no outs in the fifth, but stranded both Leffingwell and
Alyssa Flores. Three straight ground-outs by
Jamie Roland,
Alex Mitchell and
Britney Butler left the inning scoreless.
Leffingwell was the only Coyote with more than one hit.
Junior RHP
Carly Land (7-5) took the loss. She threw one inning and allowed two runs – both earned – and three hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 3, SFSU 0
The only scoring in the game occurred in the fourth inning as the Coyotes scored three runs and received a quality pitching performance from
Brianne Godfredson.
In the fourth with two outs, Wilhelms connected on a single through the right side of the infield that scored Leffingwell, who singled with one out.
That brought
Priscilla Curiel to the plate and for the second straight day, the Coyotes connected on a home run off Marisa Ibarra. Curiel's two-run shot to right gave Godfredson extra breathing room.
Curiel's home run was the only extra-base hit for the game.
Godfredson (8-4) earned the shutout victory, striking out five, walking three and allowing only three hits – all singles.
