SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino earned its first victory when trailing after seven innings this season as the Coyotes rallied with a four-run eighth inning for an 8-5 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in the opener of a doubleheader Friday at Fiscalini Field.
Junior
Brandon Day hit a towering solo home run off the scoreboard in right field, but the Coyotes were stopped in the second game, losing 2-1.
CSUSB is now 19-18 overall and 16-13 in the CCAA heading into the Saturday series finale against the Otters (17-22, 14-16). The game begins at 11 a.m.

Trailing 5-4 entering the eighth inning,
Erik Ornelas and
David Silvas each had singles to open the eighth. Day moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt and pinch-hitter
Nick Heusterberg grounded out to score Ornelas.
After
Matt Haney walked,
Bryce Holland singled on a chop to the pitcher's glove side. Holland raced to the bag and earned a single when both the pitcher and first baseman couldn't reach the bag in time and that allowed Silvas to score, giving the Coyotes a 6-5 lead.
Eric Dow gave the Coyotes their insurance runs with a two-run single through the right side.
Closer
Josh Pond earned his career-record 13th save in the ninth.
Reliever
Josh Lee improved to 2-0 in two innings of one-hit scoreless relief.
Ethan Chapman snapped an 0-for-16 dry spell at the plate with a solo home run in the first. He had two hits, along with Ornelas and Silvas.
Day ripped a three-run triple to right in the third.

Day gave the Coyotes their lone source of scoring with a blast that nearly cleared the scoreboard in right in the sixth.
The Otters' victory was just their third in 23 all-time meetings and their first-ever in San Bernardino in 11 games.
Day had two hits.
Bryant Hollandsworth (0-1) struck out four, but walked five in four innings. He allowed three hits and two runs.
Silvas stretched his hitting streak to eight games. Over his last 10 games, the Moreno Valley native is 17-for-40 (.425) with seven extra-base hits.
