SAN FRANCISCO – The Coyotes' baseball team bounced back from Friday's loss to San Francisco State with a doubleheader sweep over the Gators, 6-5 and 8-1, in the teams' CCAA series.
The wins improved the Coyotes to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA, while the Gators are 10-18, 5-16.
The clubs conclude the weekend series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is 11 a.m.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, Gators 5
CSUSB grabbed a 5-1 lead through two innings and held on to earn the victory.
In the first,
David Silvas delivered a two-run double after
Ethan Chapman and
Erik Ornelas reached on a single and double, respectively. Two batters later,
Matt Winn's single scored Silvas.
In the second,
Darren Dworak, who led off with a single, scored when
Mike Newell reached base on an error. Chapman followed with a fielder's choice that scored
Eric Dow, who singled.
Junior LHP Corey Caruso earned the victory. He threw 6 2/3 innings and struck out five, walked three and gave up four runs, three earned. The Coyotes' bullpen was strong and
Josh Pond earned his eighth save on the season. He threw 1 1/3 innings and struck out three and faced just four batters.
Winn later added a double for two hits and Chapman and Dow each had two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 8, Gators 1
The Coyotes had three multi-run innings capped by a four-run fourth as they won going away.
CSUSB had two runs on two hits in the second, led by Eric Day's RBI-single that scored
Chris LeFay, who saw action for the first time this season.
In the fourth, Day's RBI-double scored
Virgil Chavira and Chapman delivered a two-out, two-run triple. Silvas added an RBI-single in the four-run, five-hit fourth.
Silvas added a double that scored \Newell, who singled in the sixth. Winn finished the Coyotes' scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Ornelas, who reached on an error.
Lucas Sanford earned the win in six innings. He gave up four hits and struck out two.
Day finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Silvas and Dworak each had two hits.
