Coyotes, Pioneers split Saturday doubleheader

Coyotes honor Curiel, Holtzclaw, Lee on Senior Day

Senior Jacqelyn Holtzclaw homered for CSUSB in its 8-0 win over CSUEB.
SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State San Bernardino celebrated Senior Day on a hot Saturday, posting a split in its doubleheader against visiting Cal State East Bay.

Senior Cassidy Lee threw a three-hit shutout in the opener, an 8-0 win in five innings, but the Coyotes suffered a disappointing loss in the nightcap, dropping a 5-1 game in nine innings. CSUSB, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA West Region, is now 30-19 overall and 17-15 in the CCAA, while the Pioneers are 23-24, 13-19.

Game 1: Coyotes 8, CSUEB 0 5 innings

Senior Jacquelyn Holtzclaw's two-run homer to left field put the Coyotes out front 2-0 in the third, and put the game away with a six-run fifth inning that was called with two outs and two runner left on base.

In the decisive inning, the Coyotes sent 10 batters to the plate.

Courtney Wilhelms produced a two-run double to left that scored Britney Butler and Holtzclaw.

Two batters later, Jamie Leffingwell came through with a one-out double that scored Wilhelms. Two batters later, Stefanie Pace laced a single to right that scored Leffingwell and the Coyotes led 6-0.

After Felicia Cervantes grounded out, Jamie Roland's RBI-single scored Priscilla Curiel, who singled to left. That brought up Butler, who came through with the game-ending RBI -- a single to left that scored Pace.

Wilhelms and Roland each had two hits, and Holtzclaw and Wilhelms each had two RBI.

Lee struck out two and did not issue a walk as she improved to 12-7.

Game 2: CSUEB 5, Coyotes 1 9 innings

Heidi McCallister was the hero of the game for CSUEB, as she hit a pinch-hit, grand slam in the ninth inning off Coyotes reliever Brianne Godfredson and that turned to out be the game winner.

CSUSB scored its run in the fourth inning by virtue of a wild pitch. Alyssa Flores reached base on an error by the third baseman and Leffingwell followed with a single. Curiel loaded the bases on a hit by pitch with no outs.

Flores then scored on a wild pitch thrown to Pace, but the Coyotes couldn't pad the scoring. Pace and Cervantes both grounded out and Roland popped out to the pitcher to end the threat.

Jamie Yaller tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run off Lee.

The Pioneers loaded the bases in the ninth with a single to Taylor Neuman, a fielder's choice by Sara Holdridge and a single from Yaller. After a flyout by Devin Salmones, McCalliser hit for Devon Mercurio and she got the job done with a shot to center to clear the bases.

Leffingwell and Cervantes each had two singles for the Coyotes. Pace had a double, the only extra-base hit for the Coyotes.
