David Silvas had a two home run day and junior
Josh Pond became CSUSB's single-season saves leader as the Coyotes split their Saturday doubleheader and series finale with Cal Poly Pomona, winning the opener 5-3 and losing the second game, 7-1.
The Coyotes are 17-17 overall and 14-12 in the CCAA and face visiting Cal State Monterey Bay next week. The series gets underway Thursday at Fiscalini Field at 3 p.m.
Game 1: Coyotes 5, CPP 3
The Coyotes grabbed a 2-0 lead right off the bat in the first inning.
Erik Ornelas connected on a one-out double and scored on Silvas' single through the right side of the infield.
Matt Winn followed with a single that scored Silvas.
CPP tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth and grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth with three consecutive singles to start the inning.
That set-up the two-run sixth for the Coyotes, who added an insurance run in the ninth.
Mike Newell's RBI-single to center scored Javier Gutierrez, who pinch ran for
Brandon Day, who singled to left.
Starter
Lucas Sanford (5-1) threw six innings, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts. He did not issue a walk and allowed three runs -- all earned.
Pond came on in the ninth and earned his record save. He gave up one hit, but struck out two and faced four batters. He also tied the all-time career saves record with 12, now shared with Brian Hammer (2001-02).
Game 2: CPP 7, Coyotes 1
Silvas gave CSUSB its only run of the game when he connected on a solo home run in the fourth inning.
It was the only extra-base hit for the Coyotes, who finished with five hits off the Broncos' Jake Reed.
Winn had two singles for the Coyotes.
Silvas continues to a strong story for the Coyotes. This past week's CCAA Player of the Week, Silvas is now 13 for his last 31 at-bats (.419) with five doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and has scored eight runs. He is hitting .346 on the season.
