Box Score: Cal Poly Pomona 7, Coyotes 6
SAN BERNARDINO -- The Coyotes have been stellar at holding leads this season as they entered Friday's game 8-0 when leading after seven innings.
But visiting Cal Poly Pomona tarnished that feat with a five-run rally over the final two innings and defeated the Coyotes 7-6 before a crowd of 147 at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes, now 16-16 overall and 13-11 in the CCAA, will wrap-up the weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday at CPP. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
Brandon Day went 3-for-5 for the Coyotes with a double and
Erik Ornelas and
David Silvas each had two hits for the Coyotes, who had 14 hits on the afternoon.
The Coyotes trailed 2-1 through five innings, but came up big with a five-run sixth inning and seemed to be in control.
Ornelas led off the inning with a single and scored on
Chris LeFay's single.
Matt Winn followed with a single that scored Silvas and the Coyotes led 3-2.
John Pollock then came on in relief of Broncos starter Kevin Bosson and Day immediately greeted the reliever with an RBI-single that scored LeFay.
Two batters later,
Nick Heusterberg came up with a pinch-hit, two-run double down the left-field line and the Coyotes held a 6-2 lead.
But the Broncos scratched three runs in the eighth with Tyson Edwards' two-run single the big blast.
In the ninth with Coyotes' ace
Josh Pond on the mound, the Broncos' Travis Taijeron struck with a two-out, two-run homer to right and that put the Broncos on top 7-6.
In the Coyotes' ninth, Day hit his double with two outs, but
Bryce Holland ended the threat when he flew out to first to end the game.
Pond fell to 0-1 on the season and Geoff Broussard improved to 1-1 with 1 2/3 innings of relief.
