Box Score: Coyotes 6, CSU East Bay 5
HAYWARD -- Cal State San Bernardino earned its first CCAA series victory this weekend, earning a 6-5 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
David Silvas was key in the victory as he went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles as the Coyotes improved to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA. The Pioneers dropped to 5-18, 3-13.
Erik Ornelas and
Nick Heusterberg each drove in a run in the first inning as the Coyotes never trailed. Ornelas' RBI double scored
Ethan Chapman, who led off the game with a double. Two batters later, Heusterberg drove in Ornelas with a single.
The Pioneers answered right back with two runs on three hits in the first and the game remained tied at 2-2 through four innings.
In the fifth, Silvas hit a one-out home run to center and
Virgil Chavira laced to single to left that drove in Huesterberg, who reached on a hit by pitch.
Ornelas gave the Coyotes a 5-2 lead in the sixth. The senior hit a two-out single that drove in
Eric Dow, who led off with a double.
The Pioneers cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth, but the Coyotes answered that run with the decisive run in the seventh on Heusterberg's double that scored Silvas, who also doubled.
CSUEB cut the Coyotes' lead to 6-5 with two runs in the eighth.
Reliever
Josh Pond earned his third save of the series when he entered in the ninth. He retired the first two batters, then gave up a single, before he got a game-ending strikeout. He finished the weekend with strikeouts in three innings.
RHP
Casey McCarthy earned his win and improved to 3-2. He threw 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Reliever
Trevor Longfellow threw one inning and had two strikeouts.
The Coyotes return to Fiscalini Field on Thursday when they face CSU Dominguez Hills. First pitch is 3 p.m.
