Nick Heusterberg hit a solo home run as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Cal State East Bay 4-1 and later, defeated the Pioneers 2-1 for the doubleheader sweep in CCAA play Saturday.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Coyotes answered with single runs in the fourth and sixth for a 2-1 lead.
Eric Dow's run-scoring double drove in
Brandon Day in the fourth and
Mike Newell ripped a double to score
Virgil Chavira with a double.
Heusterberg contributed his homer in the seventh and the Coyotes hung on for the win.
LHP Corey Caruso improved to 2-1 this season. He threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed one run with five strikeouts and three walks. He scattered allowed just one hit.
Josh Pond earned his fourth save of the season with two strikeouts in the ninth.
In the second game,
Matt Winn gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the fourth.
The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth, but CSUSB (8-9, 5-4) got the game-winning run from
Ethan Chapman's RBI-single that scored
Matt Haney.
Trevor Longfellow earned the win in 1 1/3 innings. He entered in the fifth after
Lucas Sanford threw 4 1/3 innings. Sanford struck out six.
