Box Score: CSU Easy Bay 2, Coyotes 1
HAYWARD -- Two plays at the plate did not go Cal State San Bernardino's way as the Coyotes were dealt a 2-1 loss to host Cal State East Bay in the first game of a four-game series that began Friday afternoon.
The Coyotes, now 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA, look to turn things around Saturday against the Pioneers, 5-15, 3-10.
CSUSB scattered nine hits off the Pioneers, but again had trouble placing together timely hits. The Coyotes stranded six men on base and could not help out Coyotes ace Aaron Brooks.
Brooks threw seven innings and gave up seven hits and allowed just two runs -- both earned. He had five strikeouts and has yet to give up a walk in more than 38 innings this season.
Three straight hits by CSUEB put the Pioneers on the board in the fourth inning. Lincoln Clapper hit a RBI-single.
CSUSB came right back with Eric Dow's lead-off home run that opened the fifth inning.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth when Charlie Sharrer hit a home run off Brooks.
The two plays at the plate for CSUSB were costly. Mike Newell was forced out at the plate when he tried to score from second on a single by Ethan Chapman.
After Dow's home run, Chapman doubled to left center. He advanced to third on a sacrifice from Anthony Smith. But the Pioneers got out of the jam when they secured a double play on a flyout to center from Erik Ornelas and Chapman was thrown out at the plate.
Dow, Chapman and Virgil Chavirra each had two hits for the Coyotes.
