Aaron Brooks earned his first victory of the season and junior
Brandon Day played a big role in helping out his teammate as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Cal State Stanislaus 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Monday at Fiscalini Field.
The Warriors grabbed a 4-0 lead through two innings and held on to defeat the Coyotes 9-6 in an 8-inning game that was shortened due to darkness.
CSUSB is 3-5 and 1-1 in the CCAA as they Coyotes now prepare for their four-game series against Cal State L.A. that begins Thursday in L.A. The Warriors, who opened the season with six straight wins, are now 7-1, 1-1.

Brooks was outstanding in his eight innings. The San Bernardino native struck out nine and scattered five hits and dodged out of trouble in the sixth.
Kory Vitato led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice. One batter later, Thomas Shull reached base when Brooks mishandled a ground ball and the Warriors had runners at first and third with one out.
But Brooks struck out David Cardenas and got Michael Johnson to line out.
In the eighth inning,
Matt Haney and
David Silvas each singled to begin the inning and pinch-hitter
Anthony Smith loaded the bases on a walk.
Matt Winn struck out, but Day came through with a two-run double to left and
Virgil Chavira added an RBI-double and CSUSB led 3-0.
Junior reliever
Josh Pond came on in the ninth. He struck out two, but CSUS ended the shutout on DJ Arrelano's RBI-single.

The Warriors scored four runs – all earned – off Coyotes RHP starter
Casey McCarthy through two innings and never trailed.
The Coyotes got back into the game with a three-run third.
Ethan Chapman's RBI-double scored Silvas and three batters later, Chavira's two-run single capped the three-run, three-hit attack.
But CSUS added three runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth for the win.
Silvas had three hits, while Haney, Chavira and
Matt Winn had two hits apiece.
