SAN BERNARDINO -- The 2011 regular season for the Coyotes' soccer team came to a close and over the final 10 games, you would be hard-pressed to find a better run in the history of the program.
The Coyotes and San Francisco State closed the door on the regular season Sunday with a 1-1 tie in 110 minutes of play before a crowd of 250 at Coyote Premier Field.
Senior
Kristina Gomez scored her second goal of the season for Coyotes, when she got a free look from a feed by
Jasmine Bell and CSUSB led 1-0 at the 50th-minute mark.
The score stood until SFSU's Michelle Kay got a fast break of sorts that brought out Coyotes GK
Chelsey Jones for the stop. Kay got an opening on a pass from Kiley Williams and tied the game at 1-1 at 85:04.
The teams went into OT and SFSU had the only shot in the first 10-minute frame, but the game remained tied.
In the second OT, Gators GK Annicia Jones was outstanding, particulary inside the final two minutes. At 108:53, senior
Casey Hirsch planted a header that seemed like it was a no-brainer goal, but Jones made an incredible stop.
Carissa Kutkowski had a SOG that was stopped 21 seconds later, and Jones came up big again on another shot by Hirsch at 109:42.
CSUSB, ranked eighth in this week's NCAA West Regional poll, will not advance to this week's CCAA Tournament. The Coyotes are 9-6-3 overall and finished their last 10 games 7-1-2.
The NCAA Tourney field will be announced Nov. 7. The top six teams in the West Region advance to the tournament.
The game marked the final regular-season game for eight seniors --
Julie Allen,
Ashley Cabrera,
Mackenzie Dill, Gomez,
Kelsey Gudgeon, Hirsch,
Tiffany Mallick and
Brittany Wilding.
SFSU finished 8-8-2, 6-8-2.
