SAN BERNARDINO -- It took awhile for the Coyotes to get their act together in their game against Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 against the 2-10-2 Lumberjacks, junior Jani Carmona gave the hometown crowd something to cheer about by converting two penalty kicks inside the final 10 minutes of play as the Coyotes won 2-1 at Coyote Premier Field.
CSUSB improved to 9-5-2 overall, 7-5-2 in the CCAA and extended its school-record unbeaten streak to eight games. Not since losing 4-0 at UC San Diego on Sept. 25 have the Coyotes been defeated.
HSU played a physical contest -- 20 fouls and three yellow cards -- and that created difficulty for the Coyotes' offensive attack. But Carmona made the most of the opportunities when at 79:57 she converted the first PK to tie the game at 1-1.
Then, four minutes later, Carmona was fouled inside the box and had another opportunity for a PK. She again came through and CSUSB led 2-1 with six minutes remaining in the game.
HSU's Liz Christensen gave her team the 1-0 lead whe she scored off a feed from Tamra James in the 49th minutes, ending Coyotes sophomore GK
Chelsey Jones' consecutive scoreless minutes streak at 470 minutes and 20 seconds.
CSUSB out-shot the Lumberjacks 14-7 and had five corners to HSU's two.
The Coyotes, ranked seventh in this week's NCAA West Region poll, remain in the thick of the CCAA Tournament chase that will go down to the final weekend of regular-season play this week.
CSUSB faces Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and completes the regular-season Sunday on Senior Day against San Francisco State.
