SAN BERNARDINO -- Women's soccer has existed at Cal State San Bernardino since 1988. And in their 452nd game in their history, the Coyotes accomplished a program first.
Freshman
Emily Mardon and junior Jani Carmona each scored goals and midseason GK starter
Chelsey Jones were the stories Sunday as the Coyotes stopped No. 20 Cal State L.A. 2-0 in CCAA play.
The victory was a school-record sixth straight for the Coyotes, now 8-5-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the CCAA, and also stopped Cal State L.A.'s nine-game unbeaten streak. Not since a 2-0 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 11 had the Eagles been defeated or shutout.
Mardon gave the Coyotes the lead with her first career goal. Fellow freshman
Sierra Van Meter set up for a corner kick and booted ball in front of the net. Mardon got control of the ball and booted it past Eagles' GK Jessie Walworth's right side at the 33:59 mark.
For good measure, the Coyotes iced the game in the 78th minute. After a goal kick from Cal State L.A., Jones served up a beauty of a kick that bounced over the defender about 45 yards out from the Golden Eagles' net. Carmona got control of the ball and used her foot speed to separtate from two defenders. She then drove right down main street and served up a shot that Walworth couldn't control.
The Golden Eagles (9-3-2, 7-3-2) had their chances, especially with five corner kicks in the second half. But each time the Coyotes stopped them from scoring.
Jones continues to give her team a lift after earning the start following the 4-0 loss to No. 4 UC San Diego on Sept. 25. She earned her sixth straight win, her third consecutive shutout and fourth since the streak began. She stopped four shots and now owns a 0.63 GAA in 575 and 25 seconds this season.
Carmona and senior
Casey Hirsch each had two SOG and they out-shot the Golden Eagles, 13-10.
CSUSB returns to Coyote Premier Field on Friday when they take on North-leading Sonoma State. The game begins at 12:30 p.m.
