SAN BERNARDINO -- A great story has developed over the past few weekends with the Coyotes' women's soccer program.
Opening the season 0-5-1 in the CCAA and in desperate need of something positive, the Coyotes have turned the corner big-time with an achievement that's happened only four times before in school history.
Behind goals from
Carissa Kutkowski and reigning CCAA Player of the Week
Casey Hirsch, and the standout play from sophomore GK
Chelsey Jones, the Coyotes won their fifth-straight game by turning back visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-0 at Coyote Premier Field on Friday.
It marks the second straight season the Coyotes have earned a five-game winning streak and they'll attempt to earn a school record six in a row when they take on Cal State L.A. on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. They share the record with the 2010, 2000 and 1992 squads.
The Coyotes got on the board in the 10th minute of play off senior
Kelsey Gudgeon's corner kick. Kutkowski was up front and fired in a shot that ripped past Toros' GK Tiffany Hollis.
The game remained tight at 1-0 until Hirsch came through again in the 77th minute. The Yorba Linda senior scored in her fourth straight game with a shot off a header from
Mackenzie Dill, that was set up by
Brittany Wilding's corner kick.
The goal also was Hirsch's team-leading seventh goal this season and her 16th in her career.
Jones was outstanding in her GK position as she improved to 5-0 on the year with her third shutout during the 5-game winning streak. She had three saves.
The victory was CSUSB's first over the Toros since the 2009 season.
