ARCATA -- Senior guard
Eisha Sheppard scored a game-high 20 points off the bench and was perfect in eight attempts at the free throw line as visiting Cal State San Bernardino defeated Humboldt State 69-62 in CCAA women's play Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.
The win pushed the Coyotes to an 8-1 overall mark and 4-1 in the CCAA as they snapped a six-game losing streak against the Lumberjacks.
Senior
Sierra Chess played a pivotal role in her return to Arcata as the former Lumberjack scored a season-high 16 points with five rebounds as the Coyotes led throughout most of the game, then utilized a crucial run inside the game's final five minutes.
The Lumberjacks fought back from a double-digit defict and pulled to within a point, 51-50 on Jenna Hamilton's inside basket with five minutes left.
But Chess answered with a layup and Sheppard fired a 3-pointer and the Coyotes orchestrated a 10-2 run and led by nine (61-52) with 2:11 left.
Angela Streets added 12 and
Danielle Shows 10 as the Coyotes finished 39.3 percent from the floor, but were the benefactors at the line, hitting 22 of 26 shots.
Shows grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds and recorded the first double-double of the season for CSUSB.
Sheppard, Streets (5-5) and Chess (4-4) were a combined 17-of-17 from the stripe.
CSUSB completes the weekend at Sonoma State on Saturday. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Sheppard improved her consecutive free throw streak to 20 consecutive... The victory was CSUSB's first in Arcata since a 59-49 decision on Feb. 3, 2007 and its first overall since the 2007-08 season.
