PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Junior forward
Kristina Gomez redirected a crossing pass from Jani Carmona into the Grand Canyon net late in the first overtime Sunday night to give Cal State San Bernardino a 2-1 victory over the Antelopes in a non-conference women's soccer match.
The victory gives CSUSB a 2-0 record as it returns home to prepare for its CCAA conference opener on Friday at Humboldt State.
The Coyotes trailed 1-0 early as Marina Nesic converted penalty kick in the 27th minute but CSUSB got the equalizer in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal by Carmona, who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Biola on Friday in San Bernardino.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffani Mallick, who recorded a shutout against Biola, had three saves in the net in her second overtime match of the season. Stephanie Phillips made three saves for the host 'Lopes.
GCU had a 9-8 edge in shots while the Coyotes had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
"I thought the team played very well against a much-improved Grand Canyon team," said Coach
Travis Clarke. "GCU had 18 new players so we really had no idea what to expect. Based on what I saw they should challenge for the PacWest title this season for sure."
"Our defense was a bit shakey at first but we were able to settle down as the game went on. We had the run of play overall and were able to attack on a consistent basis throughout the second half. The goals by Carmona and Gomez were great. We hope that sparks more goals in the future."
