MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Cal State San Bernardino's volleyball team finished day one of the Phoenix Inn/GNAC-CCAA Challenge Tournament 2-0 after sweeping Central Washington, 3-0, in the opener and handing host Western Oregon a 3-1 defeat in Friday's final match.

Jane Chafeh knocked down 20 kills to lead Cal State San Bernardino to its win over Central Washington in the first round of play at Central High School in nearby Independence, Ore.
Chafeh hit .333 for the match while junior all-American middle blocker
Samantha Middleborn had 11 kills on .625 hitting. Sophomore setter
Camille Smith had a match high 36 assists while junior libero
Kelcie Tolan led in digs with 14 as the Coyotes prevailed 25-22, 27-25 and 25-16.
Meg Ryan had a double-double for the Wildcats -- 11 kills and 10 digs while Kady Try delivered 10 kills and seven digs. Setter Carlee Marble had 28 assists.
CSUSB hit .259 for the match to just .142 for Central Washington. The Coyotes dominated the third set, hitting at a .556 clip, with 16 kills in 27 attacks with just one error.
Set two was the most competitive with six lead changes before the Coyotes pulled out a two-point win.

The Coyotes used a more balanced attack to down Western Oregon, 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14).
Middleborn was virtually unstoppable in the middle with a match-high 17 kills on .773 hitting, along with five block assists. Chafeh had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and junior transfer
Priscilla Collings (Seattle Pacific) impressed with 12 kills on .360 hitting off the bench.
Smith tallied 33 assists in the match to give her 69 in the first two matches. Junior transfer
Krista Hasemeyer (Cal Baptist) contributed 11 assists. Tolan added 14 more digs from her libero position to give her 28 in the tourney thus far.
Morgan Carty contributed 10 digs.
CSUSB hit .320 for the match with only 14 errors in four sets on 122 swings.
Western Oregon hit .180, paced by Danielle Reese with 13 kills. Stephanie Beeler was impressive on the front line with six block assists for WOU to go with eight kills. Samantha Ward had 10 kills in a losing effort.
Perhaps pumped up by the home crowd and a chance to upset the No. 2 team in NCAA Division II, the Wolves pounced on the Coyotes early and took the first set 25-23. CSUSB took the next three sets although they were pushed in the third set. The score was tied 10 times before the Coyotes pulled out a 25-21 win.
The Coyotes continue play in the tournament Saturday with matches against Western Washington
and Alaska Anchorage.
