SAN BERNARDINO -- Newcomer Jani Carmona scored 5:45 into the first overtime Friday to give Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting Biola University on a blistering hot day at Coyote Premier Field.
Carmona's goal ended a tremendous defensive battle between the two teams. CSUSB outshot the Eagles 14-2 and the Coyotes' goalkeeper Tiffani Mallick was never required to make a save in the 95-minute contest.
Carmona, a transfer from Hawaii-Hilo, scored on a free kick from just outside the 18.
Biola's Erin Frushon made two saves in goal for the Eagles, now 1-1 on the season while the Coyotes take their 1-0 record to Grand Canyon University for a Sunday match with the Antelopes in Phoenix, Ariz.
"Biola was a very organized team. We had trouble until late in the second half breaking down their defense," said Coyotes Coach
Travis Clarke. "Toward the end of regulation we finally started to attack their final third."
Clarke said "it was a hard fought game. We have to give Biola a ton of credit. They played us well today."
