PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Cal State San Bernardino's top-scoring combo of
Obi Agwu and
Albert Cabrera picked up where they left off last season, leading the Coyotes men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Saint Martin's University Thursday night at Grand Canyon University field.
CSUSB, now 1-0 on the 2010 season, will play Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday night, also at GCU.
The Coyotes scored twice in the first 23 minutes of the match and led 2-0 at the half before the Saints cut the margin in half in the 61st minute. Agwu nailed the clinching goal in the 73rd minute, finishing a cross from sophomore
Martin Esqueda.
This was a big victory for the Coyotes, coming off a 15-6-1 season that led them to appearances in the CCAA conference and NCAA Far West Regional in 2009. Saint Martin's was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion in 2009 and was ranked as high as No. 5 in the West Region last season.
Cabrera, the Coyotes' leading scoring in 2009, put CSUSB up 1-0 at the 7:32 mark of the first half with an 18-yard shot after a nice feed from
Julian Garcia. In the 23rd minute, Agwu knocked home a shot during a scramble in t he box after taking a feed from freshman
Juan Galarza.
The Saints answered in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal by Ruben Orozco who drilled a shot from 30 yards out.
Senior goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha had two saves on the night as the Coyote defense limited the Saints to just six shots and a pair of corner kicks.
