Box Score: No. 4 Coyotes defeated Cal Poly Pomona 3-0
SAN BERNARDINO -- Through one month of the season, No. 4-ranked Cal State San Bernardino has shown a propensity of playing tough on the attack.
That effort showed up again Wednesday night as the host Coyotes took care of business with a 3-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona before a boisterous crowd of 711 at Coussoulis Arena. The Coyotes improved to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the CCAA. CPP drops to 4-7, 2-5.
CSUSB fired off a 378 attack percentage on the strength of 44 kills on just seven errors.
Junior
Morgan Carty led a trio of Coyotes with 12 kills, while All-American senior
Jane Chafeh had 11 and senior OH
Nicole Moore chipped in 10 in the 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 victory.
Carty also had two service aces and two block assists, while Chafeh had 10 digs and a block assist and Moore had four digs and a solo block.
In Set 1, the Coyotes took command early and never trailed. They fired a collective .379 on 13 kills and forced nine Bronco attack errors. The Coyotes had just one attack error in Set 2, but CPP made a game of the set when Kristin McNeese had a kill that cut CSUSB's lead to 15-14.
A kill from Carty gave ownership back to CSUSB and with
Kelcie Tolan serving, the Coyotes extended the lead to 19-14.
After a service error, the nation's top hitter
Samantha Middleborn threw down a kill for CSUSB and that ignited a 5-0 run that put the Coyotes in the driver's seat.
CSUSB trailed 9-7 in Set 3, but a 9-1 run capped by kills from Moore and setter
Camille Smith put the Coyotes firmly ahead at 16-10 and never let the lead drop to less than four the remainder of the game.
Smith had 32 assists with 10 digs, one solo block and three assists.
The Coyotes return to Coussoulis Arena on Friday night when they play host to Chico State. First serve is 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The vocal group "Locke" -- a trio from Rancho Cucamonga sang the National Anthem... The Coyotes are now 10-0 when they own a higher attack percentage than their opponent... The victory was the Coyotes' 34th consecutive at home and their 25th straight CCAA win at Coussoulis... CSUSB has not lost a set in conference play, improving to 21-0 over their foes.
