Box Score: Coyotes 2, No. 1 Cal State L.A.
SAN BERNARDINO -- It's apparent that home cooking appeals to the Cal State San Bernardino men's soccer team.
Two days after it soundly defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-0, the Coyotes provided their fans with another thriller, this time toppling the nation's top-ranked team in Cal State Los Angeles, 2-0, on a day where temperatures reached nearly 110 degrees.
The Coyotes, now 6-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCAA, are assured of at least a share of the CCAA South Division lead after their big double-dip weekend. CSULA, which was defeated at unranked Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, fell to 5-2-0 and 4-2-0.
Julio Ayala again was the focal point of the Coyotes' offense as he added the game-winning goal in the 49th minute of play. Off a free kick from teammate
Obi Agwu, Ayala rebounded the ball up close and fired it into the net past Golden Eagles' GK James Irwin.
The goal was Ayala's third in the past two games.
In the 75th minute, senior
Harry Cruz delivered a rocket shot from 45 yards straight down the middle and past Irwin and the Coyotes' bench erupted with glee.
The Coyotes'
Tanner Olinger came up big for his second consecutive shutout over two of the finest programs in the country. Olinger had five saves on the day -- four in the second half.
