Chico staves off late rally by CSUSB, 2-1

Loss drops No. 13 Coyotes women's soccer team to 5-1, 3-1 in CCAA

Jani Carmona scored her team-leading fifth goal in CSUSB"s 2-1 loss to Chico State Sunday.
CHICO -- Cal State San Bernardino scored a goal in the 79th minute and had at least two good chances for the equalizer but came up a goal short as Chico State dropped the 13th-ranked Coyotes from the ranks of the unbeaten, 2-1, Sunday in a CCAA conference women's soccer match.
The host Wildcats (3-3 overall, 2-2 CCAA) were able to achieve a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the second half on the Coyotes (5-1 overall, 3-1 CCAA) as Lisa Webster scored the first goal at 20:34 and then assisted on the match-winning goal by Dennie Jo Bergen at 60:55.
CSUSB finally broke through against Wildcats goalkeeper Sydney Oliver at 78:11 as Jani Carmona notched her fifth goal of the season on a header from a feed by junior Kristina Gomez. Carmona had a shot on goal at 87:10 saved by Oliver, then missed wide on another try at 87:46.
Tiffany Mallick had one save in goal for the Coyotes while Oliver stopped four Coyotes tries and her teammates made one stop. Chico had just three shots on goal and made two of them.
CSUSB played without senior forward Unity Beddingfield who was advised before the match by the Chico State trainer to not compete because of a mild concussion suffered on Friday at Cal State Stanislaus.
"Three consecutive travel weekends took its toll on us," said Head Coach Travis Clarke. "We had trouble matching their energy at the start of the game. We made a late push in the final 20 minutes, scored a goal and almost a few more. We need to figure out how to play hard the entire game."
San Bernardino outshot the Wildcats 9-6 while Chico led in corner kicks 5-3.
The Coyotes return home to face the 2009 NCAA Div. II runnerup Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Friday at Coyote Premier Field, followed on Sunday by Cal State L.A.
