TURLOCK -- Cal State San Bernardino outshot host Cal State Stanislaus 8-4 in the first half and had nine corner kicks in the match but couldn't get the ball into the net Friday night as the host Warriors broke through in the 52nd minute for a 1-0 CCAA conference men's soccer victory over the Coyotes.
It was the second straight loss for the Coyotes, ranked No. 6 in the West Region entering the weekend and a big win for the Warriors, ranked No. 7 in the West. Stanislaus remained unbeaten at 3-0-2 (2-0-1 CCAA) while the Coyotes are now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Terry Gross scored his second goal of the season off connected assists by Manny Avila and Trevor Grimbleby and goalkeeper Javier Rosales stopped five shots on goal by CSUSB to preserve the shutout.
The Coyotes played without senior all-West Region first-teamer
Obi Agwu, the team's leading scorer thus far in 2010 who sat out after being sent off by the referee with a red card against Sonoma State last Sunday.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Tanner Olinger was beaten for the lone Stanislaus goal but saved five other tries by the hosts in a match played before a crowd of 1,236 fans in Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors wound up with a 13-12 edge in total shots but CSUSB earned 14 corner kicks in the 90-minute match to just five for Stanislaus. The Warriors were whistled for 16 fouls and two yellow cards while CSUSB had 10 fouls and no cards.
The Coyotes move on Sunday to Chico State for a key match against the Wildcats, ranked No. 20 in the nation and No. 3 in the West Region.
