ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State San Bernardino scored first, but Sonoma State produced three unanswered goals, enabling the Seawolves to snap the Coyotes' three-match win streak Sunday with a 3-1 CCAA conference men's soccer victory.
The Coyotes, ranked No. 10 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region coming into the weekend, are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA while SSU, ranked No. 25 in the nation, is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA as well.
Freshman
Julio Ayala scored his first collegiate goal in the 30th minute of the first half after receiving a through ball from senior
Obi Agwu and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper for a 1-0 CSUSB lead.
Twenty-one seconds later, Taylor Varnadore answered for Sonoma State with the first of his two goals on the day to make it 1-1. Then, just 45 seconds before halftime, Ebby Lombardi scored on a free kick for a 2-1 Seawolves lead.
Varnadore scored again in the 62nd minute, taking a crossing pass from Lombardi and directing a diving header past CSUSB goalkeeper
Tanner Olinger.
Olinger had one save in 90 minutes in the net for the Coyotes while Juan Sosa made four saves while yielding one goal for SSU.
The match was very physical with seven yellow cards and one red card issued by the referee.
CSUSB returns home only to hit the road again next weekend for matches at Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
