CSUSB women shut out Humboldt, 2-0

Villavicencio, Sanchez score in CCAA soccer opener

Amanda Villavicencio scored the match-winning goal for CSUSB in its 2-0 win over Humboldt State Friday night.
ARCATA -- Amanda Villavicencio and Jenna Sanchez scored goals and Cal State San Bernardino posted in second shutout of the regular season Friday night with a 2-0 victory over host Humboldt State.
Villavicencio scored off an assist by junior Casey Hirsch in the 38th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead and Sanchez, the senior defender-midfielder tacked on the clinching goal in the 77th minute to improve to 3-0 on the season, 1-0 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes outshot the Lady Lumberjacks 13-5 and had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
"We played hard today," said Coach Travis Clarke. "Nineteen of our players played and everyone did well."
The Coyotes adjusted well from their home playing surface that measures 120 yards by 75 yards to the football field sized home of the Lumberjacks (110X55).
"It is hard to play how we like to on a field like that," Clarke said. "However, we weathered their surge toward the middle of the game and ended up regaining control."
Villavicencio converted a cross from Hirsch and beat the keeper high to the near post. Sanchez' goal was a rebound of a corner kick that came to her at the top of the box.
Tiffani Mallick shut out the 'Jacks for 90 minutes and was required to make only one save in the match, on a try by Arielle Kern of Humboldt State. HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg stopped four Coyotes shots in a match played before 117 fans.
HSU has constructed a new soccer complex that is expected to be ready for play later this season.
The Coyotes move on to face Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Sunday.
