Triple in Chico

Cal State San Bernardino won the final two games of a tripleheader

CHICO — In a rare triple-header the Coyotes offense notched six doubles, a triple and two home runs, including a grand slam, to take two of three games from conference rival Chico State. 

The Coyotes (21-21, CCAA 13-10) beat the Wildcats (18-15, CCAA 11-12) 10-4 and 4-2 after losing the first game 7-2.

Chico State took a 2-0 first-inning lead in the morning game, but CSUSB evened it up at 2-2 in the second inning. Felecia Cervantes singled down the left field line and came home to score on a Courtney Wilhelms double. Jamie Leffingwell followed with a double of her own to score Wilhelms.

The Wildcats retook the lead in the third with three more runs and added two more in the fifth. Jessica McDermott (8-4) earned the victory while Brianne Godfredson (7-5) absorbed the loss.

The middle game was scoreless until the third when Chico State took a 2-0 lead.

CSUSB took its first lead of the day in the fourth inning. After scoring on a Wildcat error, Leffingwell hit a homer to left filed to give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead.

Cal State San Bernardino added a run in the fifth on an Ashley Collinwood single to short before the Coyotes unloaded in the sixth with five runs. Alex Mitchell drove in the first run of the inning before Britney Butler added to her league-leading home run total (9) with a grand slam to give CSUSB a 9-2 lead. The Coyotes added another run to in the top of the seventh to make it 10-2.

Cassidy Lee (7-4) earned the victory for CSUSB, allowing four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work

After trading lopsided victories, the rubber match of the tripleheader was a tight game.

In the Coyote half of the first, Butler tripled to left field before Jaquelyn Holtzclaw singled her in, giving CSUSB a quick 1-0 lead. The Coyotes made it 2-0 in the third. Butler reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second and then came home on a Wilhelms RBI single to right field.

Chico State cut the lead in half with a run in the third before both teams scored a run in the sixth inning to make it a 3-2 game. The Coyotes took a 3-1 lead when Leffingwell doubled to left field to score Collinwood, but Chico State got a solo homer to pull the Wildcats within one at 3-2.

In the seventh, Butler reached base on an error and scored from first on a Wilhelms double to give the Coyotes a 4-2 lead.

Erica Prentice (5-4) gave up two runs on four hits and walked two scoring the complete game victory.

On the day, Butler had a grand slam, a triple, four RBIs and scored four runs. Leffingwell went 6-for-10 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Collinwood went 4-for-7.

The Coyotes come home to face Sonoma State in doubleheaders Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
