TURLOCK — Cal State San Bernardino could not overcome two errors costly errors as Western Washington ended the Coyotes' Mizuno Tournament of Champions with a 3-2 win.
Despite outhitting the Vikings, 5-3, and holding an early 2-0 lead, the Coyotes (17-20) gave up three unearned runs in the opening game of the silver bracket, Sunday morning, to fall to WWU.
Britney Butler scored the first run of the game for CSUSB in the bottom of the first. The freshman led off with a single to center and advanced to third on an error by WWU's center fielder. Butler then scored on a
Priscilla Curiel groundout to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes added another run in the second on an
Alex Mitchell singled up the middle that scored
Felicia Cervantes, who singled to left to lead off the inning.
That was all the offense CSUSB had as it was held to just one hit the rest of the way.
Western Washington made it a 2-1 game in the top of the third on a single, after the first error, and tied it at 2-2 on a sac fly in the fifth. The Vikings scored the winning run in the sixth after another Coyote error to take the win.
Erica Prentice (4-4) took the loss for the Coyotes after throwing the first six innings. Prentice allowed just four hits before turning it over to
Cassidy Lee who tossed the final inning.
Erika Quint (5-6) picked up the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits in seven inning of work.
Five different Coyotes recorded a hit as Mitchell led the way going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
CSUSB doesn't take a day off, as it will play at Notre Dame de Namur in an 11 a.m. doubleheader Monday.
