Full Day at Mizuno

The Coyotes went 2-1 in the first day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK — Britney Butler went 7-for-11 with two RBIs, two doubles and a run scored as Cal State San Bernardino nearly pulled off a three-game sweep in the opening day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions.

The Coyotes (15-19) won its first two games of the day with a 4-3 win over Western Oregon and a 5-3 victory over St. Martin's (Wash.) before falling in the final game of day, 3-2, to No. 3 Hawaii Pacific.

The Coyotes were up bright and early for their 8 a.m. start with Western Oregon. The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held it until the top of the fifth when Butler hit a single to center to tie it at 1-1.

The Coyotes added two more runs in the top of the sixth, scoring the first on a Stefanie Pace single to left and took a 3-1 lead on a wild pitch that allowed Ashley Collinwood to score. The Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as they rallied with two outs with four straight base hits to tie the game at 3-3.

CSUSB scored the winning run in the top of the seventh on a single to left center by Felicia Cervantes that drove in Butler who led off the inning with a single to left.

Carly Land (1-8) picked up her first win of the year, throwing the final inning and a third. She came into the game after the four straight hits by WOU in the sixth to get the final out. She then retired the first two batters of the seventh before giving up her only hit of the game and then struck out the final batter.

Butler and Jamie Leffingwell each went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Butler notched an RBI.

In the middle game of the day, St. Martin's got out of the gate quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the first before jumping out 3-0 on the Coyotes. The Saints took advantage of a CSUSB error in the first to score two unearned runs before a trio of hits in the third added another run.

The Coyotes stopped the bleeding in the fourth with a pair of runs off the bat of Alex Mitchell who laced a bases-loaded single through the right side to score Collinwood and Pace to cut the lead to 3-2. CSUSB took the lead with two more runs in the sixth. Pace started the rally with a one-out double to center. Leffingwell traded places with Pace with another double to center, that tied the game at 3-3, before Butler gave the Coyotes the lead with a single to center to score Leffingwell.

Collinwood drove home the final run of the game in the seventh with a single to right.

Butler went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Leffingwell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

After the Coyotes gave up three runs on five hits in the first three innings, Cassidy Lee (4-4) tossed the final 4.1 innings, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out four.

In the final game of the day, the Sea Warriors jumped out early on CSUSB with a run in first before adding an unearned run in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead through six innings of play. The Coyotes were held to just two hits through the first six innings before Pace broke through with a lead off single to start the seventh. Jacquelyn Holtzclaw then stepped to the plate with two outs and hit her third home run of the year to make it 3-2.

That was as close as CSUSB came as Sherise Musquiz recorded the final out to move to 16-1 on the year. Brianne Godfredson (7-4) picked up the loss after going the complete game. She allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out six.

The Coyotes close pool play with games against Central Washington at 6 p.m. and Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) at 8:15 p.m.
