SAN BERNARDINO — Felicia Cervantes went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ashley Collinwood went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 4-3 victory over San Francisco State in the second game of a doubleheader, after being run ruled in game one 10-1.
With the split, the Coyotes (10-15, 9-7 CCAA) still remain in a tie for fourth place in the CCAA with San Francisco State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
In the nightcap, CSUSB took the lead in the first inning. Britney Butler led off with a double to the right-center field fence and Jacquelyn Holtzclaw walked to put runners at first and second. Courtney Wilhelms bunted to advance the runners, but third baseman Lea Cardenas erased Butler at third. Cervantes came to bat and hit a shot through the right side that scored Holtzclaw and moved Wilhelms to second. Priscilla Curiel walked to load the bases before Ashley Collinwood hit a slow roller back to the circle, but Wilhelms beat the throw at the plate to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
SFSU got a run in the third when Summer Powell walked, advanced to second on a fielders choice, and came home to score on a long single by Kelsey Wood. The Gators tied it at 2-2 in the fourth on a solo home run by Jessica Delgado
SFSU took a 3-2 lead in the fifth and had a chance to add to the lead, but Erica Prentice (4-3) came into the game, in relief of starter Cassidy Lee, and ended the Gator rally with one pitch, getting Cara Spence to fly out.
The Coyotes battled back to regain the lead in the sixth. Butler walked to lead off the inning and after stealing second, she advanced to third when Holtzclaw grounded out. Wilhelms later hit a ground ball to SFSU shortstop Summer Powell that should have ended the inning, but Powell bobbled the ball and Wilhelms beat the throw to first, scoring Butler to tie the game. Cervantes took advantage of the miscue with a single up the middle, moving Wilhelms into scoring position at second before Curiel came through with a double down the left field line, scoring Wilhelms and giving the Coyotes a 4-3 lead. Prentice was effective in the 2.1 innings she pitched, retiring all seven batters she faced.
SFSU ended any chance of a sweep in the first game of the doubleheader. The Gators batted around in the second inning with four singles and a home run by Woo to take an early 6-0 lead. SFSU added a run in the third on a solo home run by Delgado.
The Coyotes answered in the bottom of the third when Vanessa Justin hit her first home run of the season, but that was just one of three hits for the Coyotes in the opener.
SFSU added three more runs in the fourth on a solo homer by Karolyn Gubbine and a two-run shot by Cardenas to give the Gators a 10-1 lead and that was all the Gators needed for the five-inning run-rule. SFSU pitcher Ashley Jackson (6-2) got the win while Prentice took the loss for CSUSB.
The Coyotes now travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a doubleheader, Tuesday.
