SAN BERNARDINO — Catcher Chris LeFay hit a walk off solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning against the Cal State L.A as Cal State San Bernardino snatched a 6-5 win. LeFay's homer capped off a three-RBI game that saw him go 2-for-4 at the plate with a sacrifice fly.
The home run pushed the Coyotes to an 8-1 CCAA record and 8-2 overall. With the loss the Golden Eagles are now 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The seesaw battle began in the first inning when Cal State L.A. right fielder Sam Wiley hit an RBI single to put CSULA up 1-0. That did not deter left fielder Matt Winn though as he hit his own two-run blast in the bottom of the first to regain the lead for the Coyotes. Winn went 3-for-5 in the game with a run scored and two RBIs.
CSUSB scored two more in the fourth to go up 4-1 on a double by third baseman Darren Dworak and LeFay's sac fly. Cal State L.A. came back in the sixth with three runs to tie it on a solo home run by Wiley and a two run shot by Max Moya that drove in Cliff Quick.
Not to be outdone the games hero in waiting, LeFay, answered with an RBI single that scored Dworak, bringing the score to 5-4. Chris Matzner's game tying RBI fielder's choice in the eighth for Cal State L.A. is what pushed the game into extra innings.
The Coyotes got a quality start out of Aaron Brooks who went six innings giving up four runs, of which only three were earned. In relief, Carlos Nakamura and Lucas Sanford combined to pitch five innings only giving up two hits and one earned run. Sanford got the win improving his record to 2-0 while Camron Collard took the loss dropping his record to 0-1.
The series continues tomorrow at Fiscalini Field with another 2 p.m. game and will close Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Cal State L.A.
