SAN BERNARDINO --- Despite the cool weather still hanging around after the rain early Saturday morning, Cal State San Bernardino still had hot bats in a 5-1 win over No. 11 Humboldt State after dropping the opening game of the doubleheader, 5-1.
The Coyotes (4-4, 3-1 CCAA) pounded out 22 hits Friday and kept it going with 15 Saturday.
Britney Butler and Priscilla Curiel led the way with Butler going 4-for-6 with her fourth home run of the year and two runs scored while Curiel was 3-for-5 at the plate with a two-run home run. Kat Kolde also hit her first home run of the year, brining the two-day total to eight for CSUSB in the four games they have played with the Lumberjacks.
In the opener, the Jacks took the first lead of the game on a solo home run by Lindsay Warren to left field in the top of the second and added two more on a two-run double by Kristen Nouzovsky in the top of the third.
Ally Blenis drove in two more runs in the top of the sixth for the Jacks with a double to right center.
Kolde tried to get the Coyotes back into the game with a lead off home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-1. Courtney Wilhelms reached on a two-out single to short and Ashley Collinwood walked to put runners at first and second before a wild pitch put the two in scoring position.
Neither came any closer as Vanesa Hoover (1-5) picked up her first win of the year and struck out the final batter. Carly Land (0-2) took the loss, getting chased after four innings of work.
Butler was 2-for-3 while Kolde was the only Coyote to drive in a run.
In the nightcap, Butler put the Coyotes on the board in the bottom of the first with a lead off homer. Jacquelyn Holtzclaw then reached on an error before scoring on a single up the middle by Collinwood. CSUSB added another run in the second when Holtzclaw singled in Butler who reached on fielder's choice.
The Jacks got a run back in the top of the third when Chrissy Stalf hit a solo home run to straight away center to make it 3-1.
CSUSB took a 5-1 lead on Curiel's two-run bomb to left field and got behind Erica Prentice (2-1) who tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three.
Curiel was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Butler was again 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The two teams are schedule to play again tomorrow in a 9 a.m., non-conference doubleheader.
