SAN DIEGO — It had been 15 days since Cal State San Bernardino has hit the dirt outside of practice. The anxiety built up showed in a 3-1 win over UC San Diego and a late charge against the same Tritons teams in a 7-5 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

The Coyotes (1-3) picked up their first win of the year and watched Priscilla Curiel go 5-for-7 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored a double in the twin bill. Felicia Cervantes also went 4-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the opener, Cal State San Bernardino did all its damage in the first inning, scoring three runs. Brittney Butler reached base on an error to start the game, but was left at first through the next two batters. Then with two outs, Courtney Wilhelms laced a triple down the left field line to score Butler. Cervantes then singled through the left side to score Butler and Cervantes scored the final run with Stefanie Pace's single to make it 3-0.

UCSD threatened twice, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and scored one in the sixth, but left two in scoring position.

Erica Prentice tossed the first 2.1 innings for the Coyotes and allowed just one hit in the first two innings. Three of the first four batters singled for the Tritons to start the bottom of the third, and loaded the bases, before Brianne Godfredson entered the game and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

In the sixth, Godfredson got into a jam of her own with three straight singles by UCSD to start the bottom of the sixth. With no outs and the bases loaded that brought the infield in and allowed Wilhelms to make a play from short to catch the lead runner at the plate for the first out. That still left the bases loaded and allowed the only UCSD run to score on a passed ball, before Godfredson retired the next two batters.

CSUSB left two runners on in the top of the seventh before Godfredson slammed the door by setting down the side in the bottom of the seventh. It was sophomore's first win of the year as she moved to 1-1.

Ashley Collinwood and Cervantes led the way with each going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Curiel also went 2-for-4 and Stefanie Pace went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single, but the Coyotes answered in the second when Carly Land doubled to right center to score Curiel and tie the game at 1-1.

UCSD broke the game open with a five-run second inning, taking a 6-1 lead.

Butler brought the Coyotes closer with a one-out, solo home run over the left center field wall and Jaquelyn Holtzclaw and Wilhelms followed that up with singles to put runners at first and second with one out. After a fly out to center, Cervantes singled to second base and Holtzclaw rounded from third, trying to score at home, but was thrown out at the plate.

CSUSB made it a 6-3 game in the fourth when Curiel scored on a Butler sacrifice fly to center, but UCSD answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 7-3.

Curiel made it 7-4 when she hit a two-out single up the middle to score Wilhelms in the top of the fifth and Pace drove in the final run in the seventh with a single through the left side.

The Coyotes are back in action with a six-game series against Humboldt State Friday through Sunday with each day being a doubleheader. Friday and Saturday's games are CCAA games while Sunday's are non-conference games.
