Box Score: Sonoma State def. No. 6 Coyotes 1-0
TURLOCK -- In an evenly-played game Friday afternoon, sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino was stunned by Sonoma State in the 88th minute of play when Taylor Varnadore scored on a header and the Seawolves earned a 1-0 win in the semifinal of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Seawolves advance to the championship match for the fourth straight year and will face the winner of Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
"It was ours for the taking,'' said Coyotes and CCAA Coach of the Year Noah Kooiman. "For about 17 minutes, they had us going, but we just didn't get it done. Can't fault the effort because it was a hard-fought game from the beginning. We knew it would be a battle between the 18s and they got it done.
"But all of us feel as if we live for another day with the NCAA Tourney berth available. I know there are about 80 other Division II teams out there that would be in our position in a heartbeat. We'll find out Monday and hopefully we'll be playing next week.''
Cal State San Bernardino (13-5-1 overall) are ranked No. 1 in this week's West Region poll.
In an evenly played contest, Cal State San Bernardino held a slight 19-17 shot advantage. Both teams had eight shots on-goal.
CSUSB had its best shot at breaking through against Seawolves GK Juan Sosa. First-team All-CCAA senior
Jose Godinez came up the right flank on a beautiful give-and-go and hit a rocket from 18 that dinged off the cross bar with about 6 minutes left.
"He had a great shot that either deflected off or their guy got a hand on it,'' Kooiman said.
The Seawolves took advantage of the contest's last scoring opportunity, when Frank Becerril and Cam Vickers assisted Varnadore on the game-winner at the 88:10 mark.
